Jeremy Hellickson debuts for Tampa Bay Rays by crushing Minnesota

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Jeremy HellicksonJust three years ago, the Tampa Bay Rays were the laughing stock of the American League. With a World Series appearance in 2008, they served notice that the kids were finally ready to compete with the Yankees and the Red Sox, leapfrogging in talent over Baltimore and Toronto.  While not exactly baseball’s biggest stage, the Rays served notice again that their system is still full of talent when they brought up pitcher Jeremy Hellickson to make a start against the Minnesota Twins on Monday night.

High hopes for Twins’ Kubel

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Jason KubelWhen a player has a fantastic season, the expectations of him are that much higher the following year, and that is certainly the case right now for Minnesota’s Jason Kubel. He tore it up as designated hitter for the Twins in 2009, and after experiencing some incredible personal and team success last season, Minnesota is hoping to improve in many areas, and while Target Field is one of them, they hope the on field product is that much better.

The top of the AL crop

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, MLB, Rumors,

Joe MauerWith the recent announcement that Tim Lincecum was the National League Cy Young Award winner, it leaves only two more 2009 Major League Baseball award winners to be announced, which will be done this coming Monday. One of those is the American League Most Valuable Player, and, like the NL Cy Young, the AL MVP race couldn’t be closer. With Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira, Miguel Cabrera, and Joe Mauer in the hunt, the award could go to anybody.

AL Manager of the Year - Not Ron Gardenhire

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Front Office, MLB,

Ron GardenhireAn unexpected travesty has occurred. Mike Scioscia has been chosen as the American League Manager of the Year for leading the Los Angeles Angels to another successful season. His accomplishment overshadows now five-time bridesmaid Ron Gardenhire, whose success in Minnesota goes unrewarded yet again. Gardenhire, who has helmed the Minnesota Twins for almost a decade, is a record five-time runner-up for the award. In that time span, he’s accomplished much more than most managers ever hope to. But it wasn’t always so easy for the 52-year old manager from West Germany. Gardenhire will remain the Twins’ skipper at least through the 2011 season.

AL Silver Sluggers announced with few surprises

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Kudos, MLB,

DescriptionThe American League Silver Slugger Award winners were announced recently, and six of the nine selections came out of the East, which further goes to show just how powerful – literally – this division is. The New York Yankees had repeat winners in Mark Teixeira at first-base and Derek Jeter at short. The Boston Red Sox’s Jason Bay was honored with his first, the Tampa Bay Rays’ Evan Longoria at third, and the Toronto Blue Jays each had first-timers with Aaron Hill at second and Adam Lind as the designated hitter. The rest of the league squeaked in Joe Mauer, catcher for the Minnesota Twins with his third, and Ichiro Suzuki from the Seattle Mariners and Torii Hunter from the Los Angeles Angels in outfield, with their third and first, respectively.

Vincente Padilla
Scott Baker did all that he could do for his team on Sunday, but the Minnesota Twins offense was simply not up to the task of Vincente Padilla and the Texas Rangers. Padilla, Eddie Guardado, and closer C.J Wilson combined for a nine inning shutout. The game’s sole run came in the 6th inning, when rookie catcher Taylor Teagarden hit a solo home run.

“What he did today is what he’s capable of,” Rangers skipper Ron Washington said of his starter Padilla. “It was encouraging for the team because we’ve been struggling to get some things going. He gave us all a shot in the arm.”

Twins Demolish White Sox In Doubleheader

Justin Morneau
Eleven games. Thats how long it took for the Arizona Diamondbacks to score 30 runs overall. Today Joe Mauer and the Minnesota Twins scored 30 runs in two games. In game one of the doubleheader phenom catcher Joe Mauer had four hits and five RBI’s. In game two reigning AL MVP Justin Morneau hit three home runs. These two losses pushed the White Sox 13 games behind first place in their division. Game one ended with a football score of 20-14, and in game two the Twins blanked the White Sox with a score of 12-0. Surprisingly, normally hot-headed manager Ozzie Guillen was calm following these two losses.

“It was hard to watch, hard to feel that way,” Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen said. “You can do nothing about it.”
